This is, remarkably, Om Unit’s debut album. That is because Jim Coles has been gradually making his presence felt under the new moniker, with collaborations and individual tracks that have already marked him out as one to watch. ‘Threads’ fulfils all the potential shown in those releases, with a very strong awareness of beats and atmospheres. Right from the start of ‘Folding Shadows’ we are in to a brooding, slightly threatening soundscape, but Coles only builds on this as the album progresses. ‘Reverse Logic’ is a really strong instrumental, and the ominous bass wobble that he introduces to imitate the prowl of ‘Jaguar’ is brilliantly done. Meanwhile the loping beat and expansive ambience of ‘Healing Rain’ are a powerful combination, as are the swirling textures that give Gone The Hero a backdrop for ‘Just Sayin’. Only MC Jabu’s contribution to ‘Patients’ feels a bit too ‘conscious’, but that’s a matter of opinion. In reality this is a piece of work that sits outside of traditional hip hop and dubstep confines, and it also blends a healthy combination of UK and US influences without sounding like anything in particular. Definitely worth catching and experiencing to the full.
