The latest missive – all debuts – from the respectedly out there Leeds operation is yet another fearless foray into banging together disparate styles in a warped dimension of its own. This time, hiphop seems to be the main tip as Afrophysics lead off with ‘Voodoo’, which has been remixed by Red Sound and Average White Boy into a spectral funk odyssey dominated by accoustic guitar and cut up into an intoxicatingly spooky space funk. ‘So So’ by Jonny Alpha and Jay d manages to veer manically between cool g-funk and rattling drum and bass, while Slip’s ‘Bustin’ Out The Loony Bin’ is a smokey vamp that falls down the stairs a few times in a free jazz ambush before settling into a live-sounding blues workout. The Popeye Dolls’ ‘Bonus Track’ comes on like weird, spaced LSD lounge music before the Moroder-electro kneesup of The Slumberjack’s contagious ‘Ladby’ – which recalls late 70s NYC (Doesn’t that sound like David Byrne?). As I said, fearless in the imagination stakes and all highly pleasurable.
