Kasper Bjorke – After Forever – (HFN Music)

It is something of a surprise that the music of Kasper Bjorke hasn’t had more recognition in this country. He writes excellent pop songs, but gives them an electro edge, leaving them left of centre but with some excellent electronic production. There are once again a good number of unexpected touches to ‘After Forever’, his fourth album, like the steel pans at the start of ‘Sylvia’, where CTM somehow taps into the spirit of Sade over Bjorke’s crisp production. ‘Marbled Blood’ sharpens its attack to add a deliciously sinister edge over its loping beat. Of the guest turns the ex-Hercules & Love Affair singer Nomi Ruiz probably acquits herself the best in ‘Lies’, which masks its sweet sound with a good dose of attitude, but ‘Apart’ is excellent too, with Sísý Ey adding a brilliant, defiant chorus to this quicker electro/disco hybrid. Bjorke is still in good health then, and this is an excellent collection of pop with a darker, brooding edge.
