1000 Names – Migration Pads – (Drut Recordings)

This is the fourth album from Bulgarian duo 1000 Names – their first for Kelpe’s Drut label – and it’s a really nice piece of work that refuses to pin itself down to a specific style. Though it’s largely deep in thought there are some really nice synth touches that go with relatively conventional four to the floor beats, more energetic, broken up sounds, and vocal snippets that dip in and out. ‘The Caravan’ is worth the outlay alone, shimmering in the sun over a steady beat, while at the other end of the spectrum we have the blissful, reflective ‘Winter Pool’. In between we have the loping disco beat of ‘Enter Jules Verne’, the moody, claustrophobic world of ‘Hand-Me-Down Brain’, or the free sounding break of ‘Rombs Unusual’. All are indications of the duo’s versatility, which translates really well into album format. Recommended.
