Tom Vek really is a one man band, but comparisons with Beck are unfavourable – Vek has his own style, or multitude of styles, instantly recognisable with a rich vocal tone and a production style that borders on ragged. Opening track ‘C-C (You Set The Fire In Me)’ is an anthem in the making, as is the blustery ‘I Ain’t Saying My Goodbyes’. Some will find his vocal style an irritation – ‘If I Had Changed Your Mind’ should convince one way or the other – but if DFA have floated your boat recently, Vek is a good next destination.
