Slam – Reverse Proceed – (Soma Recordings)

In which Slam, in their first album for seven years, look to a more experimental approach to making long players. It works, too – whereas before they’ve shown they can master song writing craft, the productions have always been the key to a good Slam track – and here Reverse Proceed looks further back to their debut album Headstates in the way it is entirely instrumental. It runs without a break, too, a tactic that works really well as we are ushered in to ‘Tokyo Subway’ with ambient noise, a la Deepchord, but with the sense that tensions are steadily building. By the time ‘Pattern A3’ comes along these tensions are spectacularly released and the club is really rocking, driven still further into a frenzy by ‘Factory Music’. Naturally by the time we get to ‘Resolved’, the calming washes of sound are back – bringing up the lights on a really impressive album that ranks among the duo’s finest achievements.
