Wax Stag – II – (Old Habits)

Never one to complicate anything, Rob Lee brings his Wax Stag project round for a second run – and charms us once again with his invention. There is a nice subtle line of humour running under a lot of Lee’s work, and a very positive vibe too. Tracks like ‘Cloud Cake’ are intricately woven together and provide moments of uplift, while ‘Race To The Lake’ crackles and shimmers with excitement, and ‘Summit’ ends in a gorgeous warm swirl of sound. Lee uses older sounding instruments that sit in thrall to classic house days – check out the sounds in ‘Sparkling River’, for instance – while at all times there is a strong bass sound to set the rhythmic profile. Most importantly of all this music has a heart, pulling discreetly at the emotions in a very British way.
