Drinks – Hermits On Holiday – (Heavenly)

If you’ve been following the career of Cate Le Bon you will know this prolific singer / songwriter has an unpredictable streak that marks her out as somebody unique. Not many people can sing their own relatively introverted songs while managing a guest slot with the Chemical Brothers! Le Bon can though, and here she teams up with Tim Presley – who is an equally flexible musical spirit, having worked with The Fall and Ty Segall as well as on his own. When the two come together as DRINKS their music is completely endearing, quite lo fi in its production and always telling a story. The metronomic title track is subtly humourous, a line that runs through the whole of ‘Tim, Do I Like That Dog?’, an indulgent but again highly enjoyable tale of a game played on tour. The chemistry between the two is nicely explored through the album, whose madcap elements are brilliantly brought into focus.
