Lee Bannon – Pattern Of Excel – (Ninja Tune)

As far as I can tell, this album from Lee Bannon, the last to be released under his own name apparently, is not about the Microsoft program and a series of data that he’s been working with. Instead it sounds like a group of fragmented thoughts have been rounded up to sit on a long player, where their moods vary considerably to form a strange, incoherent whole. And yet the approach is a successful one, because the fragments Bannon uses Starts atmospherically with the slow burning Artificial Stasis, hits keen emotion with fragmented tracks like the vocal ‘Paofex’. There are some very beautiful moments, such as the soft and intimate ‘Kanu’, which give the pattern a nice sense of ebb and flow between the more energetic stuff. Definitely worth exploring.
