When an album comes along from one of the old guard many tend to view in with weariness, what is it that keeps this guy coming back to the studio when they are no longer reliant on releasing music for bookings? In the case of Cristian Varela it is an unwavering commitment to music first and foremost and this is reflected in his carefully considered 3rd full-length studio album. Many would criticize the format as not relevant to a DJ, because ultimately a DJs purpose is to keep the dance floor jumping throughout the night, but a separation must be made between actual musicians who cherish the musical process and see releasing music which lasts beyond next weekends parties as a calling rather than a necessity. In the case of Cristian you get the feeling that he will be making music long after people stop listening.
Opening with Caramba a low slung rolling percussive number, which sets the tone for the rest of the record. Long standing Varela fans will recognise his distinctive studio touch and newcomers, instantly enthralled by the notable level of musician ship the Madrid based producer delivers. Clearly someone that knows his way around the studio, the first single from the album LOVEPERC stands out as a dancefloor heavy hitter. Gradually progressing with tracks like Silver Tokyo and Destinations, the album reaches its peak with Human Ok, Tiger and Ovnivion come with the thick and fast techno that Cristian has been synonymous with throughout his career.
On reflection Max & Max does several things very well, it will please long-term fans of Varela, as an artist he has always inspired loyalties in his followers and you feel this album has been aimed at them. Newcomers to Varela equally will be quickly inducted into what he, as an artist is about. Whether Max & Max stands the test of time is another matter, but as a one stop shop to showcase his talents Cristian Varela has managed to condense and package these perfectly for all to consume.
