The back to basics approach suits Simian Mobile Disco really well, as they look to create music purely for clubs to play out. ‘Welcome To Sideways’ is a form of compilation from previous singles, but it works really well, most notably in ‘Face To Face’, which scales down brilliantly in the middle, paring back to just one chord and a shrill hi hat sound before moving on. The bell-like sonorities of ‘Space Is Filled With Ringing’ are incredibly striking, benefiting from James Ford and Jas Shaw’s commitment to longer, DJ-friendly structures. Throughout the album their stripped back approach works extremely well, going back to the first principles of dance music – rhythm and movement – and presenting them in stirring techno form. Great stuff.
