Something of a concept album for the Brighton band’s second album, and it works – not by being a sprawling 70 minute epic with everything and the kitchen sink, but by loosely basing their songs on main protagonist Jack. Soul-searching torch songs ‘Dizzy Dumb’ and ‘Advice’ are both winners, the latter featuring Terry Callier, but unexpectedly ‘State of You’ gives it some large funk with a vocal that puts Jack right in his place. By the end everything’s ‘Alright’, but the loose concept and superior orchestrations, help elevate this well above the level of coffee table chillout.
