What would I play for someone who visits my house?
You know I would play Fatback tunes that I thought should have been a hit or at least played on the air.
If the person is musician. These are the albums I would play:
01. Charlie Parker “Live at Townhall”
Bird at his best with Dizzy. Go home and study this.
02. Cliff Brown “Joy Spring”
To hear what a tight group is supposed to sound like
03. Lee Morgan “Sidewinder”
to learn how to be funky, the real funk.
04. Charles Williams “Trees and Grass and Things”
Young musicians at that time that you didn’t hear about but was playing their asses off.
05. Don Pullen “New Beginning “
Its on the cutting edge, searching but still in.
06. Bubba Brooks ld school Jazz musician played from the heart, that sing in his horn.
07. Miles Davis “Bitches Brew “
A Must Album to have in your collection.
08. John Coltane “Love Supreme”
Listening to this lets you know their no boundaries in music.
If the person is singer:
01. Mahalia Jackson “Mahalia sing song of Christmas” – This is singing from the soul.
02. Donnie Hathaway “Donnie Live in DC ” Study Donnie learn how to tell a story.
03. Jesses Belvin “Goodnight My Love” – He’s cool, and he just sings.
04. Marvin Gaye “What’s Going On”- He studied Donnie and carried it on.
05. Steve Wonder – Genius
06. Michael Jackson – “Thriller” Still the best.
07. Betty Carter “Ray Charlie and Betty Carter”- My favourite duet ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’.
08. Sarah Vaughan – Sassy, I think her Pablo recording was some of her best work, but I like all her stuff.
09. Nat King Cole “Greatest Hits” Another of those collector items. Listen to it for diction, how to phase and tell a story.
The Fatback Band – ‘Feel The Fire’ single is out now on BKO Prodcutions.
