Born Under Punches Talking Heads / Sire
SH – I’m a bit obssesed with eno productions from around this period – the polyrythmic percussion, tape delays and guitars – so dense but still sounds minimal somehow, completely ahead of its time.
“Les Fleurs” Minnie Ripperton / Capitol
SH – Pure class, lush arrangements and orchestration and a truly amazing vocal.
“Vitamin C” Can / Grey Area
SH – The drums and bass especially, the swing of it all really appeals to me coz its all just that little bit off centre.
“Only Shallow” My Bloody Valentine / Creation
SH – A total trip, woozy dense and unforgiving.
“1/1” Brian Eno / Virgin
SH – Such a beautiful understated line and incredibly subtle developments.
“Venus In Furs” The Velvet Underground / Warners
SH – I’m a huge velvets fan and I particularly love the violins in this.
“Walk On Guilded Splinters” Dr John / Rhino / Elektra
PY – Although I love cher’s version too, Dr John’s voice is so charismatic I always imagine him singing in a church at night.
“Music For Pieces Of Wood” Steve Reich / Rhino
PY – An army of tiny wooden soldiers, marching to fight a battle… you can imagine the rest.
“Un Autre Decembre” – Sylvian Chauveau / Fat Cat
PY – A man sits a table, alone, an empty glass in front of him, looking straight into the camera, any minute now he’s going to burst in tears but he’s still holding it together…
“Neighborhood 2 (Lalka)” Arcade Fire / Rough Trade
PY – Already a classic, beautiful, powerful, green, grey and muddy like a roadside in winter.
