Portland, Oregon husband and wife duo Viva Voce deliver their most immediate and accomplished album to date, as they reach for spangled pop stardom. The opening ‘Believer’ sounds huge, as it’s big wall of sound production comes in like The Dandy Warhols riding the clap happy rhythms of John Lennon’s ‘Give Peace A Chance’. The following ‘When Planets Collide’ sees Anita Robinson in cute and distant Julie Cruise mode, whilst the building guitar riff takes on a certain ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ lick. The current single ‘From The Devil Himself’ is up next, imagine The Mamas And Papas doing a cut for the Nuggets box set. Other highlights include the rocking good time that is ‘So Many Miles’, the melancholic ‘We Do Not Fuck Around’, ‘Special Thing’ & ‘Never Be Like Yesterday, all with certain shades of Mercury Rev, and last but not least the closing epic ‘How To Nurse A Bruised Ego’, which’ll have you floating on clouds in Mazzy Star mode. ‘Get Yr Blood Sucked Out’ is a big album and it should see Viva Voce rise up through the ranks.
