TOLGA FIDAN
NOW I’M WEAK EP
VAKANT

I’ve said it before but Vakant’s press releases are the best. Their records are pretty good too [and not just because I still get them on vinyl]. Singles from the likes of Mathias Kaden, Onur Ozer and Alex Smoke have catapulted them to Minus status. This debut from France’s Fidan is up there with the best and possibly even more out there than the rest. ‘Abstract Dialogues’ matches bathroom plumbing noises with prowling bass, creaks, sustained bell-drone, glassy riffage, gurgling bell-tones and, as the blurb puts it, ‘exploring a beat that flexes like a bellows, huffing hot air and ashes over the glowing coals.’ ‘Ilsa’ is lower-slung, boasting a noise like a distant steamboat and bulbous bass. The most floor-friendly ‘Desole’ boasts ‘broken subwoofer grumblings’ washing through an ice-field to top woozy effect. Goats ejaculate. Even in minimal world this is out on its own. Hey Vakant, what about a compilation when you get past the next tenth release? Let people see what they been missing.
