The Scroggins sisters from the South Bronx should need little introduction now, especially after ‘Dance’ caused a stir from a car advert last year. ESG have indeed kept on moving over the last quarter century and, instead of padding out their bare take on percussive, sexy street funk, have simply honed it down even more. The opening ‘Purely Physical’ is just a pulse, breathy vocal and more of the major bass action which is the album’s main instrument apart from Renee’s voice. The single, ‘Insane’, is simple and nagging while ‘Ex’ ventures into emotional ballad territory. Nobody else sounds like ESG or could get away with building a track called ‘Gimme A Blast’ on just those words and a mutated JBs groove. Just the fact that these true pioneers are still here, still doing it is reason for a party in itself.
