Robbie Williams in Update review shocker! Actually, the one who likes to entertain you has probably been written about before in Update, as Robbie’s by no means shy when it comes to getting some of the best producers involved in his work, and his latest, “Rudebox”, has been floating around on a mysterious white label for a few weeks. picking up plays aplent thanks to the involvement of Soul Mekanik, Chicken Lips and Riton. Riffing on an old Sly & Robbie tune, Soul Mekanik’s take spins it out in super electro-funk manner, the vocodered “why you so nasty?” vox creating a pure sleaze and grind groove. Chicken Lips head off in three different directions at once, somehow combining acid trax era movements with a drunken punk-funk / Italo disco groove. Long and effortlessly sleek, it’s one of their finest productions yet. Finally, Riton takes a leaf out of Solid Groove’s book for a full on jacking workout that generates some heat. According to the label, Mr Williams has a similarly talented and eclectic mix of producers for his soon-come new LP. In which case, he could well find himself with a whole new audience on the strength of this single.
