There can be few producers as innovative with their sound selection as Amen Tobin, and ‘Foley Room’ finds him trying out a new approach that takes old sound effects and finds them a more musical home. In addition he’s been out with his sampler – not the old records this time, but odd sounds like falling chickpeas and roaring tigers! If this sounds like a take on Matthew Herbert it couldn’t be more wrong – and the Hammer Horror piano of ‘Bloodstone’, the criss-cross rhythms of ‘The Killers Vanilla’ and the scattered but strangely euphoric ‘Always’ and ‘At The End Of The Day’ couldn’t be conceived by anyone else. As ever, a lesson in using new technology to create eye-opening new sounds.
