NICE AND NASTY

Joris sold me with his ‘Lost Memories’ accompanied by 2004’s astounding debut album Future History. Now, with his Green label up and running, this fast-rising talent from Rotterdam follows through the promise of last year’s crossover biggie ‘MPX_309’ with an album he’s set for home listening as well as club cavorting [the floor-friendly incarnation being the multiple-vinyl]. But floor or hutch, his way with strings and synths is enough to propel anyone in an upwards direction. Tracks like ‘A Thousand Lost Stars’ conjure a collision between Jam & Spoon and classic Detroit, ‘To Embody’ that sumptuous strain of mid-90s Dutch house and ‘Revelation’ a soaring, euphoric peaker. There are interesting ideas and diversions: ‘Another Place’ plants more sweeping strings over a James Brown funk groove to lethal but heavenly effect, making for an amazing tribute to the  Godfather while there are several gorgeous beatless floatation encounters. ‘Early Bird’ boasts evokes the haunting deep space feel of UR. I could go on. It’s a lovely, heartfelt album which skillfully avoids the pitfalls which befall that genre in electronic instrumental music.
