HOW IT ENDS

This is one genre-bending album. Put together by the guys who used to front Rootjoose – a Cornish funk-rock band – Rairbirds is a pretty startling attempt to make dance music with brass, strings, electronics and the kitchen sink. Kubb vocalist Harry Collier contributes well to the startling opening track ‘Blow Wind Blow’ and there’s some catchy brass band funk on ‘Unknown’, a really odd track that goes off someplace else in the middle for a spoken interlude. The duo’s ambitions rarely let up, so that while not all of this works, it’s an admirable record full of wide open possibilities.
