There’s not a great deal forthcoming on the Smoke Fairies, other than their names, Katherine and Jessica. According to their biog, they met at school, and found a shared passion for music. They’ve also spent some time in New Orleans. Which would make sense, as their debut album is a lush mixture of modern folk and gothic imagery, whispery fingers of age-old blues and swampy C&W scratching underneath the surface from time to time. It’s slightly disorientating, albeit in a good way, as their voices so intertwine with sounds and imagery it draws you into a seductive world of their own creation that’s never quite one thing or the other. Distinctive other-worldly pop music.
