In 2004, Dublin’s Donnacho Costello started his Minimise label and let fly
with ten twelve-inch vinyl releases known as the Colorseries, an iconic
collection which both homaged classics and displayed some startling
explorations. Donnacho has since gained a sizable following so this CD of
re-edited and remastered highlights of his breakthrough work comes as a
major service to anyone from original fans to those now taken by electronic
music in its purest emotional form. Acid house, classic techno and other
strains are used as stream-of-consciousness springboards, like the
spectacular acid mutations of ‘Grape’, whose B side boasted a jawdropping
seven-minute beatless intro, or ‘Orange’ recalling the steadily rising
euphoria of early Weatherall. Crucially, these marvellous outings were
created on analog equipment without computers, illustrated by the sheer
sonic depth of tracks like Pistachio and its old school percussion or the
proto-minimal ‘Mustard B’. The ambient excursions of the ‘Cocoa’ twinset
reach beyond the dancefloor whose seduction this man made a glorious science
with these records. A truly worthwhile release.
