Andy Turner takes the chance to re-release his first two albums on his own ATIC label, and it’s a timely reminder of just how good they are and how they haven’t aged. ‘Cold Water Music’ introduced him as a painter of cool, blue soundscapes but with a hip hop edge applied where necessary. The softly haunting title track, the descriptive ‘A Tree A Rock And A Cloud’ and the startling, film-noir soundtrack ‘Demonique’ show his versatility and invention. ‘Hinterland’ picks up where this album left off with some remarkably assured songwriting, and the gorgeous yearning of ‘Girl Who Fell Through The Ice’ is completely irresistible, while ‘Fall Break’ blends strings and beats with an easy simplicity. Two outstanding albums that somehow unite Cumbria with the East Coast.
