Ellen Allien
Boogybytes Vol 4
BPitch Control

The Boogybytes series was a delight from the off, so far showcasing Kiki, Sascha Funke and Modeselektor in their home environments, stretching behind the decks to create fascinating insights into their musical tastes and personalities. Being the label boss, something special might be expected of this captivating DJ-producer and there isn’t a shred of disappointment as the journey gets under way with her spoken intro to AGF’s ‘Liniendicke’ before pulses kick in and we’re off. This is the key to the set’s success in that huge, pummelling kick drums are kept to a minimum as tracks like Vera’s remarkable ‘In The Nook’ make their point via insidious synthesised throbs and basslines which hit at groin-level as cerebral effects and melodies creep in and build the atmosphere to fever pitch. When the kick does appear the effect is melon-detonating. Ellen’s selection includes expected names like Villalobos, Gaiser and Funke but there’s a welter of tackle which will surprise and tickle, like Seph’s Vidrionella remix of Andres Zacco and Lucas Mari’s ‘Carbonela’, which really does sound like nothing on this planet. When it gets sucked into the plaintive lone steel drum melody of Konpiuta’s ‘Christmas Fairytale’ we’re in a different world altogether, Ellen’s domain where all rules are suspended. Above all, it’s fantastic fun, especially oddities like Sozadams’ creepy ‘Eyes Forlorn’, which sounds like Right Said Fred shafting a robotic wildebeest.
