Autechre have rarely made music that could be described as ‘accessible’, as despite their innovations in electronic sound and music they have tended to keep to a low profile. If you’re searching for a way in, ‘Quaristice’ is a good place to start, as among its dazzling array of textures and beats, there lies a beating heart. This is unexpectedly brought forward in the Balearic tones of the opening track, while elsewhere it’s made clear in occasional references to early house music. The record may be 72 minutes long, but is full of ever-changing and involving textures, meaning it needs careful listening – but the listener is fully rewarded.
