Is it true, then? Are Foals really the emperor’s new clothes? I must admit given the hype they’ve had since the new year I approached this album with trepidation, worried it wouldn’t live up to its billing. Happily I was wrong, as ‘Antidotes’ contains some wonderful, uplifting music. Songs like ‘Cassius’ might be more radio friendly but Foals really excel in the instrumental flurries of ‘Balloons’, the fast guitar work and urgent drums working together to build a nervous energy. ‘Hummer’, ‘Two Steps Twice’ and ‘The French Open’ are similarly energetic, the last of the three one of the few songs written about tennis. Well would you believe it – Foals have served an ace.
