There was a time when the only way to hear music of such wildly-diverse genre back-to-back was on a self-made mix tape or John Peel. Now i-pod culture has prodded DJs to demonstrate their versatile tastes, like Bruce Forsyth on the decks, while groups show where they are coming from by shoving their home listening onto mix CDs. Now enjoying over five years of acclaim with three albums and various high-profile commercials, The Bees have concocted their own selection, while adding their own stuff like the mid-60s West Coast pop-psych-dub of ‘Papa Echo’. After starting gospelly with the Staple Singers’ Step Aside, tracks are allowed to start and finish unmixed, running a gamut of hiphop [Quasimoto, De La Soul], reggae [Lee Perry-Dillinger, Matumbi], soul [Little Ann, Clarence Reid], blues [Muddy Waters] and the same Silver Apples track that’s to be found on Weatherall’s great new set. Inspired inclusions like Can’s ‘I’m So Green’ and even Donovan’s sprightly flute-fest ‘There Is A Mountain’ sound perfectly at home. A sound selection indeed.
