Another shock from Jay Haze, but then you wouldn’t expect anything else from the unhingedly-brilliant individual who gave the world Fuckpony, runs a bevy of labels and teamed up with Michael Ho and Paul St Hilaire to become Sub Version for Soul Jazz’s Box Of Dub project. His sonic y-fronts know no boundaries or shame which is why it’s perfectly natural and absolutely intoxicating to hear him now delve into the realms of slo-soul, sexy grooves and hallucinogenic dub-grind sculptures with more than a nod to P-Funk. Think ‘I Call My Baby Pussy’ humping a Chi-Lites backing track in reverse or something but comparisons are pretty difficult for someone so far out on his own thang. It’s future-soul, one of the two CDs pure dubs and there’s also a dancefloor-directed twin vinyl version which I haven’t heard. The first single is called ‘Ass To Mouth’, which probably says it all. Sublime sleaze and vision all round.
