Since dance music began there have always been skilled producers looking for the right break or just some exposure, getting frustrated as their efforts easily match or better some of the over-cooked rubbish lobbed into the charts. That’s why it’s great to stumble on something almost by accident and be bowled over when it hasn’t got a horde of PRs badgering for a review. Technology has opened everything up beyond mere demo cassettes which is how I happened on this three-tracker from rising Aylesbury-based production team Eric ‘Savage’ Lipede and Trevor ‘Sounds’ Vernon, aka Savage Sounds, and their mellifluous singer Eleni. Against an organ-propelled street-funk backdrop her cool, mellifluous vocals recall New York productions of the early 90s. Current urban music has become an overcooked parody devoid of the thing which started it all – soul – but Eleni injects poignant melancholy on ‘Count On Me’ and ‘Unreal’, which is simply a great love song, another strain often overlooked in favour of today’s turgid grindathons. Anyone looking to investigate or get behind an obviously talented new R&B/urban stable should check out www.savage-sounds.com.
