When Jamie Lidell recorded ‘Jim’, his aim was to make a polished pop record he could enjoy. In that sense he’s moved on further from ‘Multiply’, as there’s little room for expressive manoeuvre outside of the framework of the carefully structured songs. His prodigious voice means this music is never dull, and songs like ‘Another Day’ and ‘Hurricane’ breeze past effortlessly. That said, the fact there is little room to move for Lidell is against his core musical instincts, so it’s to be hoped he goes within character and performs a u-turn for the next album. Lord knows he has the talent to do it.
