Its title might indicate one of those singer-songwriter albums you’d expect to hear in Starbucks, but thankfully John Matthias has much more to offer than that. With songs about Britney Spears, Jean Charles De Menezes and boxing he has an extraordinary depth of lyrical writing, expressed clearly in songs like ‘Blind Lead The Blind’, ‘Vipers’ Nest’ and ‘Stockwell Road’, with instrumentation that closely supports his sentiments. With Fink already a critical success, it highlights Ninja’s eye for a good songwriter, and with Matthias leaning on folk and blues to dress his songs, it makes for an interesting and alternative set of songs.
