Deerhunter
Microcastle
4AD

Deerhunter are a four piece from Atlanta, US. They make an incredible sound, from giant walls of velvet fuzz through to delicate whisps covered in dew. ‘Microcastle’ is Deerhunter’s first UK release for 4AD, and it opens in sonic waves as ‘Cover Me (Slowly)’ does exactly what it says on the tin, before spreading out into warped Americana Grandaddy style. ‘Never Stops’ has got a certain back in the day New Wave feel, but building psychedelics give it a whole different edge. ‘Little Kids’ shimmers in a Warhol Factory way, and the title cut would more than tickle Jason Spaceman’s fancy. ‘Calvary Scars’, ‘Green Jacket’ and ‘Activa’ are haunting & distant with not of this world qualities. ‘Nothing Ever Happened’ ups the pace and ‘Saved By Old Times’ dabbles with 60’s R&B, while ‘Neither Of Us, Uncertainly wafts in smothered in an LSD haze, and the closing ‘Twighlight At Carbon Lake’ leaves you frazzled and breathless. If you like your music shot through with class A, then you’re gonna find Deerhunter’s ‘Microcastle’ an absolute stunner.
