Glasvegas have justifiably won the accolade XFM’s best UK debut album of 2008, as voted for by their listeners, and I’ve got to say I totally agree with that. From the magnificent self titled LP comes the gritty and majestic anthem “Flowers & Football Tops”, coming on like Mogwai before bursting into The Jesus & Mary Chain meets The Everly Brothers and then some. “Flowers & Football Tops” is spine tingling stuff, “Police on my left & right, my son’s not coming home tonight…No sweeping exits. No Hollywood endings.” And it comes to a close on a rendition of “You are my sunshine…I hope you noticed how much I loved you. How could they take my sunshine away”. A powerful and devastating reflection of these fucked up times.
