Another rabbit out the hat for Matthew Herbert’s Accidental label, with a band made up of remnants from Hot Chip, Polar Bear and Herbert himself, in the shape of regular vocalist Dave Okumu. The breathy vocals work a treat as the band embarks on an album that allows Cure and New Order influences to drift around without taking over. They work some catchy stuff at times too, and ‘London Girl’ struts its stuff in an understated way while ‘Jacob & The Angel’ offers a more dreamlike state. With Herbert behind the controls the rhythms and textures are frequently changing and never dull, though don’t click and bleep as much this time – more they allow the songwriting to make itself heard. Give it a few listens and you’ll be totally sold – a band whose tag as a minimal alternative to TV On The Radio is fully justified. With knobs on.
