This is one of the more unusual compilations you’ll hear this year, as the Innervisions trinity step outside to examine their influences, and influences on minimal techno in general. This means going all the way back to the music of Steve Reich, whose hypnotic loops open the disc on ‘Electric Counterpoint’, before the soft kick drum drifts in to the sounds of Etienne Jaumet, ‘Repeat After Me’ appearing in its Ame mix. And so the mix develops at its own pace, incredibly easy to listen to as the trio meld the beats and loops together. The track selection, though, is one of the most diverse you’ll find all year, as Liquid Liquid, Patrick Moraz, I:CUBE and John Carpenter rub shoulders, creating something that’s deep, dark and incredibly chilled out. All that plus a history lesson – what more could you want?
