Ah, every audiophiles wet dream! Vinyl connoisseurs, crate diggers, trainspotters, call them what you will, or even by a fancy disco nom de plume. Dave Lee (he of the Joey Negro disco guise) knows a thing or two about unearthing hidden gems. With a dozen plus specialist comps to his name, he’s once more put together a heartbeat raising selection of lost soul, funk and boogie, possibly as the title attests, while locked in the cellar! As with what’s gone before most names/titles will mean very little to the untrained eye – Heatwave, Herbie Hancock, Chicago and Roger Troutman aside (the younger readers amongst you will also know Lisa Stansfield and of course the surprise inclusion of Trentemøller), but the actual choice of titles by them, and the other dozen artists included here, will be somewhat more brow scratching. But that’s the whole point. When you need your car fixed you go to a mechanic, an expert you know will get the job done, ditto teeth pulling, VAT returns and so on. So for a great compilation filled with a wealth of collectible and highly listenable rarities Joey Negro’s your man, and boy does he know how to get the job done.
