Roy Davis Jr appeared in the early 90s as one of the most promising new bloods from Chicago’s second wave, appearing on Guerilla with Felix Da Housecat as a protégé of Marshall Jefferson and DJ Pierre [who he replaced in Phuture]. Since then he’s released several classics, including UK garage template ‘Gabrielle’, going on to work with names ranging from Mary J. Blige to stellar singer Terry Dexter, who’s released two albums of her own while singing with anyone from Patti Labelle to Will.I.Am from Black Eyed Peas. This collaboration on Chicago DJ-producer Sean Smith’s Smooth Agent label is the expected towering house inferno, absolute class harking back to the great vocal tracks of the 90s. A hauntingly soulful song, beautifully sung and sublimely produced. There’s also a welter of diverse remixes: Innate Soul’s Andre Harris toughens it up with percussive undertow, Julius TMT goes lush and spacey, Jason B strips down to pulsing turbo-jockeys while South London’s Aaron Jerome [often heard on BBE Records] turns in three treatments – floor-friendly 4/4, gorgeously smooth and tinkling 2/4 and the ghostly experiment of the 8/4 Remix, which works a treat. Major package which should further remind the world about one of house music’s great producers.
