There’s been a lot of hype over the Big Pink of late, and with a title like ‘A Brief History Of Love’, you’d expect their debut album to deliver with heaps of ambition. And it does, handsomely. Single release ‘Dominos’, which you’ve no doubt heard blasting out of the radio lately, is typical of the forthright way the band approach their music, with concrete-heavy beats often applied to huge walls of sound, bringing to mind Creation bands of the early 1990s. This widescreen approach is a sound you’ll want to dive in to but it’s not their only trick in the bag, as the majestic keyboards on ‘Golden Pendulum’ and the cultured songwriting on ‘Velvet’ prove. A band with this versatility and confidence should not be passed over lightly – and with its release this album brings a real sense of occasion, introducing a band to keep an eye on.
