Yes, you read that right – National Geographic have got their own record label. And just before you think that might not be worth exploring, hold on a sec – as their first artist of choice, DePedro, real name Jairo Zavala, writes music of real beauty that fuses his Latin American and Spanish roots. Sometimes the vocals are soft and sultry, as they are in ‘Don’t Leave Me Now’, but then ‘Comanche’ and ‘Que Puedo Hacer Por Ti’ are more upbeat, their rhythms swaying persuasively. The result is an album that works both ways, whether turned up loud or providing some more than diverting background listening. It’s to be hoped Nat Geo Music unearth more talent like this, something fans of acts such as the Thievery Corporation should definitely get their teeth in to.
