Michael Jackson
This Is It
RCA Label Group

It’s kind of weird and certainly quite macabre to be reviewing the first “new” Michael Jackson material since ‘One More Chance’ almost six years ago. Released to the media at the stroke of midnight on October 12th, this newly uncovered master sounds like it was recorded around the time of ‘Off The Wall’ or ‘Thriller’, although greater speculation is the song was recorded during sessions for 1991’s ‘Dangerous’ opus. Chances are by the time you read this you’ll already have heard it – BBC Radio 1 playing it 4 times the first day of its release – this finger-clicking ballad is a typical MJ schmaltzy affair of unrequited love, even featuring his brothers on backing vocals. It also features during the closing sequence of the forthcoming docu-flick of the same name, and later to be found on the inevitable compilation of his greatest hits and early demos. For all the nostalgic reasons and timeless memories he gave us you’ll want to like this, but maybe, like me, you’ll just think it never made the grade all those years ago because it just wasn’t good enough to compete for a place on the final cut of those historical albums. Reportedly the first of upwards of a 100 previously unreleased Jackson songs in the vaults, let’s hope there’s better still to come.
