After hours grooving…
1. Hugh Masakela – The Boy Is Doing It
From a township chant, to a big city backbeat, bass in the place, then the horns soar, this song literally takes flight, city, country, city indeed…
2. Black Line – Myele
Italo Afro-funk, deep synth and keys, nice live sounding drums, again some cool minimal township vocals – and then it jets into some cosmic zone, languid and occlusive.
3. Gaston – Clap Song
Some crazy Atlanta funk disco, this band rides a groove, funky walking bass, flute, woodwinds, powerful drums, a southern jaunt… Haven’t played this in 7-8 years, time to bring it back out….
4. The Corporation – India
A cover of the John Coltrane classic, by a band from Milwaukee in 1969, clocking in at about 20 mins, this sounds like white guys going on a “heavy” expedition, Ray Manzarek sounding keys, the arrangement owes a lot to the Doors, but just when one wants to be cynical about it it gets a nice harmonic swing, relates to a lot of the “Brown Sound” as well…. Utopia in the midwest – I got a copy in Mexico City 1990? great at home jam.
5. Madura – My Favorite Things / Funky Broadway
Another Coltrane cover, again from some psyche/prog whiteboys from Chicago, my old partner Jeff “Chairman” Mao, put me up on this, we used it on our “Greatest Part” mix, truly a transcendent jam – one of my all time fav records – the first record I ever gave to David Mancuso. Just pulled this out for a dance party in the house with my son Roan – smiled so hard it hurt!
6. Plaisirs Erotique – Super Ero
13 mins of synth/bass driven nasty for when you went and got your special lady friend those Chanel ankle strap pumps. “Oh baby please go back into the other room and come back out again – this time walk really really slow…”
7. Esther Phillips – Just Say Goodbye
A northern giant of a jam, dirty and swinging, the opening phrase is so strong – it pulls you in, big brassy, sexy fun….. she’s telling a lover to step off, and she doesn’t seem too troubled by the matter…
8. Sonny Jenkins And The New York Potpourri Strings – That Friday Pay (instrumental)
A sweet bouncing proto disco bomb, rhythm section – tight, strings – tight, melody – proper – really an amazing get it going vibe – a jam that should be getting play in clubs… the strings kill me – hopefully some bearded jackass won’t make a horrible edit of it…
9. G.A.N.G. – KKK
Italo goodness from the north, get my car shined just so, the estate is in order, I just blew serious $ on a Carl Mollino chair… I’m taking Sandy from Malibu to La Contrada for lunch….
10. Piero Piccioni – It’s Possible
A gem from an unsung soundtrack hero, this guy has done sooo many great compositions / soundtracks soulful as fuck, tragic, dreamlike I’m a sucker for his stuff… it’s warm, rich and nocturnal…
Bonus track:
11. Coleman Hawkins – Love Song From Apachie
Nothing to say here – perfection, like that special kiss, you know it Isn’t just you leaving the earth….
