Before discovering electronic music Faodail played drums in punk and grunge bands around Glasgow. A super talented guy who produces from his home studio across various instruments including his vintage 1950s piano. Throwing himself into the outdoors is key to his craft as he pulls field recordings from some of Scotland best scenic hot spots – Loch Lomond being one. Here’s the Faodail Back To Mine…
Curtis Mayfield – Move On Up
Maybe I’m bias because it brings back so many happy childhood memories, but I guarantee as soon as anyone hears that opening riff they’ll be put in a good mood. It’s also got to be the extended version or else you miss out on that incredible drum break in the middle.
Kiasmos – Looped
I wouldn’t be making the music I do if I hadn’t been introduced to Kiasmos, and this is without a doubt one of their best songs. It really opened my eyes to the sort of sound you could achieve by mixing organic elements with electronic instruments and production and still serves as a blueprint for my own music. Looped somehow manages to sound euphoric without being over the top which is exactly what you want for an after party.
Hundred Waters – Particle
This is one of those songs that seems to exist in its own world. Whenever I listen to it, no matter how I feel, I’ll be transported somewhere where I don’t need to worry about anything. I think that’s the true value of music when it can affect you in that way.
Rival Consoles – Recovery
I’m always in absolute awe of Rival Consoles’ ability to craft these incredibly captivating pieces of music. It’s quite rare to find an artist that genuinely stands on their own in creating something that feels so new and exciting sonically. The slow evolving build over the course of the track is definitely going to keep people interested. Show this one to your hard to impress friends.
Foals – On The Luna
Foals just know how to write music that’s meant to be enjoyed with friends. The groove on this track in particular just makes it impossible to stay still, especially when that cowbell kicks in.
For Those I love – I Have a Love (Overmono Remix)
This track somehow manages to sound completely new while still absolutely oozing nostalgia. Between the spoken word lyrics and the synth work it just got this raw punk energy that I absolutely love.
Enter Shikari – Sorry You’re Not A winner
Just straight up teenage memories for me on this one. Anyone that’s ever set foot inside a rock/alt club knows how much it goes off after those three claps kick in. I’m still a massive Shikari fan and they’ve just been getting better and better over the past few albums but this is one of those tracks that everyone knows and loves.
Caribou – Can’t Do Without You
Put this song on and no matter what the season, I guarantee it’s going to feel like summer. It’s got that woozy, hazy feel that just screams BBQ with friends.
Frightened Rabbit – Set You Free
Set You Free by N-Trance is a guaranteed crowd pleaser, and I’m yet to meet a single person that doesn’t love Frightened Rabbit (in Scotland at least) so what could be better than putting the two of them together? Scott Hutchison had such an incredible voice, it just draws you in and makes whatever he’s singing about immediately relatable. Here he managed to take an uplifting pop track and turn it into a yearning love song. I’ll be forever thankful for the music they made in the short time Scott was alive.
Stevie Nicks – Sable on Blond
I found a copy of The Wild Heart on vinyl recently and was blown away by how good it still sounded. Honestly, any track from it could have been on this list but this is just a great song for when things are winding down and everyone just wants to chill out. Anyway, besides, who doesn’t love everything Stevie Nicks has worked on?
