Back To Mine with Future Self

As they prepare to release their latest record “The One”, a record in which they team up with Waifs & Strays for the remix and Jamie Jamal for vocals. Future Self’s new record shows no shortage of talent from these familiar names.  With the record just hitting stores now, check out their picks in a wonderful Back To Mine…

Jean-Michel Jarre –  Oxygene Pt 4
This was the first LP I bought after being introduced to Jarre by my dad who was very much into jazz but also the early types of crossover between classical and synthesizer music. I recorded it to cassette tape and have vivid memories of going on long car journeys listening to Oxygene in the backseat wondering how all the sounds were made.

The Prodigy – Jericho
As an impressionable teenager I was keen to learn about any new techno music that was coming out around this time, but then my friend told me to come and listen to this new sound that wasn’t really techno but also not really like anything else. He put Experience in the CD player and the first track that played changed my life.

Goldie – Inner City Life
In the midst of a record fair in my home town in Sweden I was told by a salesman that “if you like electronic music, don’t miss this album” and handed me a copy of Timeless. I bought it unheard, biked home and pressed play on the stereo and was monumentally blown away by a sound that was unlike anything else.

Dreadzone – Life Love And Unity
This album was on repeat for many nights as I got really into the combination of 4x4 kicks, breakbeats, dub delays and contrasting melodic elements all layered on top of each other. It was brilliant to see them live a few years back and realise that they are as full of energy as ever.

Covenant – Tension
In a moment of genius Swedish body synth band Covenant combine hard solid state distortion and strict octave bass lines with a real sense of funk. The synth that lands around 3 mins adds an acid flavour and I have, to some surprise, mixed this into several house and techno sets over the years.

Teebee – Human Reptile
I first heard this track on the legendary Swedish dance radio show P3 Dans when Calle Dernulf announced a new Norwegian drum’n’bass producer called Teebee. Worth keeping an eye on, he said – and how right he was. A master of the EMU samplers, Teebee twists sounds in ways not many other drum’b’bass producers have managed then or now.

Röyksopp – What Else Is There? (Trentemøller Remix)
Hyper-crisp precision is the order of the day in what may be one of the best remixes of all time – a Scandinavian hat trick combining the musical prowess of Röyksopp with the voice of Swedish icon Karin Dreijer from The Knife and the producer mastermind Trentemøller. I never tire of listening to this.

Chromeo – Needy Girl
Out of nowhere these two guys dropped onto the pop electro scene with this total masterpiece of a pop song. Produced entirely on analogue synths it channels 80s electrofunk but remains its own at the same time. Seeing them play live in a basement in Stockholm was one of my favourite gigs ever. Their studio sessions on Twitch have also been a source of entertainment during the pandemic.

Groove Armada – Superstylin (Riva Starr Remix)
This remix is a worthy update on an absolute classic – one of those tracks where you wonder if they knew what they had done once they walked out of the studio on the day they finished the track. The original Superstylin never goes out of style, literally, but the remix adds a backbone of its own and I’d play this any day.

Future Self feat Jamie Jamal – The One (Waifs & Strays Remix)
Finally, the plug: This track is out 2 July on my record label Self Control. This record means a lot as it combines the efforts of three Bristol-based musicians looking for new ways to work together through the pandemic and resulting in something quite special.
