Kraak & Smaak

Lou Donaldson – Pot Belly (Blue Note)
A Blue Note track we discovered through DJ Cam¹s first album, which sampled the drum loop for one of the tracks. It captures the essence of moody and down-beat jazz perfectly, smooth but with rough edges courtesy of Lonnie Smith’s Hammond organ stabs.

Vincent Gallo – So Sad (Warp)
Hauntingly melancholic lo-fi tune from multi-talented American artist. As this song unfortunately only lasts between two and three minutes we would suggest to listen to his album ‘Recordings of Music for Films’ as well.

Bugge Wesseltoft – Existence (Jazzland)
Modern-day ambient and chill-out classic that we first heard as the leader of a Dutch television program. Beautiful arrangements.

Augustus Pablo – King Tubby meets Rockers Uptown (Shanachie)
Of course we should pick at least one classic dub track from either King Tubby or Lee Perry, and although it was hard to choose we decided on this one for Augustus Pablo´s melodica.

The Sound – Winter (Statik)
Breathtaking song with moving lyrics by Adrian Borland. Unsung hero from the 1980s.

Nina Simone – African Mailman (Bethlehem)
It is often overlooked that besides a great vocalist she was a very gifted piano player as well. A track in Afro-Cuban style that feels like late night but is still jumpy.

DJ Food – The Crow (Ninja Tune)
A perfect combination between electronic and acoustic music. Pioneers of re-introducing jazz, soul and funk into early 1990s dance music.

Serge Gainsbourg – Requiem pour un twisteur (Philips)
The title says it all in our opinion. We would have loved to have come up with that ourselves! Early-morning vocal jazz for smoky back-alley nightclubs from our favourite Frenchman.

Mos Def – Umi Says (Rawkus)
For us – together with ‘Climb’ – the outstanding song on the ‘Black on Both Sides’ album. Modern blues that goes deep.

Tuxedomoon – In a Manner of Speaking (Cramboy)
Recently covered by Nouvelle Vague on their first album, the original is still on of our most favourite songs from the New Wave period. Brings back uncomfortable memories of puberty angst.
