Back To Mine with Funk Messiahs

Funk Messiahs are a band that rose together out of the lockdown on a mission to bring their sweet filthy Electro-Funk sound to the world. All based in London, apart from Tom who lives in Japan, the band formed and recorded all their parts remotely. Out front is vocalist Lucy (Veeresh’s Humaniversity Sound), whose deep sultry understated vocals soothe the soul; the amazing Pest trio (Ninja Tune) of Matt on guitar, Vinny on sticks and Tom on Trombone to provide the rhythm and driving funk. Super talented Kitty (Kitty, Daisy & Lewis) moving booties with the bass, and A-Lo adding Electro vibes with his vintage synths. As they drop their debut single ‘Save Me’ (Incl. Ron Basejam, Dark Wobble and Ben Pest Remixes) on brand new label, Golden Ape Records, DMCWorld goes back to Mine with Funk Messiahs…

Nirvana – Something In The Way – DGC

First heard Nirvana on “The Word” in 1993 and went and bought the album the very next day. Think it’s the only band that made me do this, ever!

Peter Gabriel – Big Time – WMG

Always had a soft spot for Peter Gabriel. I really like the Groove, bass and guitar in this one. The general harmony is ace too!

Peter Gabriel - Big Time

Vinny

The Doors – Riders On The Storm – Elektra

It’s like a song with strong visual and it has it’s own unique sound design pre synth

Led Zeppelin – No Quarter – Atlantic Records

As a drummer, I just had to….

Singto Numchok – I Just Wanna Pen Fan You Dai Bor?

When I listen to music I want it to make me dance or touch me emotionally. This does both. It uplifts me and has me shaking my booty!

I JUST WANNA PEN FAN YOU DAI BOR ? - สิงโต นำโชค (อ้ายจัสวอนน่าเป็นแฟนยูได้บ่ ?) [Official MV]

Easy Shen – 信仰

I love the mixture of sweetness and melancholy in this song. His voice is amazing. And musically, the way the track builds up to a climax, it’s such a beautiful piece of music.

Dorothy Ashby – The Windmills Of Your Mind – UMG

The harp was one of my favourite instruments growing up (although I never learnt to play it). Dorothy Ashby blew me away the first time I heard her records, this is off a favourite of mine called ‘Dorothy’s Harp’ from 1969. It’s super funky and soulful yet really beautiful.

Howlin’ Wolf – Howlin’ For My Darlin’ – KM Records

This is the best version of this song and certainly the grooviest, recorded live in Germany. Wolf is a hero of mine and has been since I was little. I love the call and response between the guitar and piano, and of course Willie Dixon’s thumping bass keeps it rocking the whole way.

A-Lo

Japan – Television – Sony BMG

I heard Japan growing up and always loved their sound and look, and this song summed up their punk roots attitude, funk, with a synth sound that just hooked me and reeled me in.

Jackie Mittoo – Wall Street – PIAS – Soul Jazz

A genius keyboard player creating genre crossing proto-house reggae grooves – unbeatable!
