Italian production and DJ trio Re-Tide formed in 2009. Melding their love of underground music of the 70’s and 80’s, their sound infuses elements of Disco, Funk and modern House, establishing them as one of the top House, NuDisco artists on the scene. As their hot new collaboration with Lukas Setto drops on Fool’s Paradise, complete with a fabulous Dr Packer Remix, DMCWorld checks in with Re-Tide.

Hey Guys! Thanks very much for taking the time to sit down with us here at DMC World. How’s 2023 been for you so far?

We are back on track. After a few tough years for us all, we have finally launched our new disco party in a really cool location called Lian Club in Rome. It’s on a floating boat on the River Tevere, very close to the city center and just around the corner from The Pope. 😊

Please can you introduce yourselves to our DMC World readers.

Re-Tide is a collaborative project between Patrizio Mattei, Danny Omich and Andrea Prezioso, and all 3 of us work for major radio stations in Italy. Patrizio works at Radio Deejay with over 5 million daily listeners, Andrea is at Radio Capital where he selects the entire music for the day, whilst Danny is at M2o, the best dance radio station with about 2 million daily listeners. Our everyday lives are filled with music, so we created a team together.

How is the Italian dance music scene at the moment, who is hot?

We love the way the guys from Groove Culture label work. There are many great Italian artists we know like Moon Rocket, Black Legend and Angelo Ferreri. With regards to events and parties, we love Rocoe from Body Heat in Milan.

What is the best piece of new music you have heard recently?

Andrea: Recently we heard a new track from the artist Elmiene ‘Marking My Time’ and it has become huge here and is now on a constant rotation on the Radio.

Patrizio: I love the last song by Shapeshifters & Obi Franky, ‘Giving Me Something Better’, remixed by Aeroplane, massive!

Daniele: Everything from Toy Tonics, especially ‘Bump Into You’.

How would you describe your signature sound?

Our Signature sound is a mix of funky, disco and house vibes from the 90’s. Patrizio and Danny produce house music together as Mattei & Omich, so working with Andrea’s extensive mind-blowing knowledge of sounds from the 70’s to today, the three of us together are musically complete.

What’s the meaning behind the name Re-Tide?

Our first records were re-edits of classic 70’s tracks. One day all together in the studio Patrizio missed spelled Re-Edit by writing it back to front, therefore Re-Tide, we all laughed and Re-Tide was born! 😀

Who does what in the studio?

We all work frequently together, even though Danny is now based in Milan, while Patrizio and Andrea are in Rome. Andrea often brings an idea to the team, while Patrizio and Danny build the track. We also reverse our roles, so we all end up either being the creative guy or the production guy.

What’s been your most successful release so far?

We have achieved good remixes like ‘Keep On Jumping’ by Todd Terry, for example. Another great track of ours is ‘Rock It’, which perfectly sums up our sound and style. Our music is often featured on the worldwide DJ’s playlists, and we have great feedback from the dancefloors when we play our music.

Congratulations on your new single with Lukas Setto, ‘Me & You’, on Fool’s Paradise. How did the collaboration come about and what can we expect to hear?

The collaboration was fantastic, we were invited to London by Toolroom, Mark Knight is an incredible team builder! When we played them our instrumental track that we had made with our top musician Stefano Donato, Lukas loved it, so he quietly closed himself into the studio and started writing a vocal melody. After a few hours he came out with the magic. What an awesome experience we all had.

The release also features a remix from the mighty Dr Packer, what did he bring to the table?

Dr Packer is one of our favourite DJs. When we did the original mix, we were aware it would have been more of a radio record. So, when Toolroom told us they had asked Dr Packer to do the remix we were so pleased as he brought the club sound into the project.

Who or what inspires your music?

Grandmaster Flowers is one of our inspirational DJ’s. When we saw his documentary called Founding Fathers on Youtube, we were blown away by the reality of how music from the streets of Brooklyn is now in our clubs because they created the first 70’s block parties on the streets of Brooklyn. A must watch.

Have you any plans for a Re-Tide album?

Yes, why not, it’s something we have been discussing a lot…. We better get on with it then!

What has been your favourite DJ gig so far this year and where are you most looking forward to playing?

Patrizio: Recently me and Danny played together in a fantastic set back-to-back with Brian Tappert in Amsterdam. Brian is a very special friend of ours, such a privilege to play alongside him.

Danny: Yeah, I remember that night.  We were at the Milk & Sugar party in Amsterdam and I’m still vibing off the good vibes we formed in console.

We would love more than ever to come back to play in London or Amsterdam – great locations for club music.

Andrea: A couple of weeks ago at our party in Lian Club, Rome, the night was off the scale while I mixed some sounds and saw the dancefloor go wild. A worldwide tour with the three of us would be great, especially Australia as Its on my go to list.

We come to raid your record collection, which embarrassing record do you chuck out the window before we arrive?

Andrea : Rick Dees – Disco Duck

Patrizio: I have a few crazy vinyl of kids music 😊

Danny:  I’ve known Patrizio since he was 10 years old and I have some of his first music tracks that I’d like to throw out the window. 😀 😀 😀

What record makes you say ‘damn, I wish I made that’?

Andrea : David Shire – Manhattan Skyline.

Danny: Michael Jackson – Thriller (the entire album).

Patrizio: Roy Ayers – Everybody Loves The Sunshine, this song inspires me all the time.

Finally, what new productions are you working on that you can tell us about?

We are currently working on new projects with some great singers and musicians, who are also special friends like Elisabeth Yorke Bolognini and Stefano Donato aka Steff Daxx. We will also be collaborating again with Lukas Setto and the Toolroom guys for a follow up as the synergy was great.

Re-Tide, Lukas Setto ‘Me & You’ (Incl. Dr Packer Remix) is out now on Fool’s Paradise.
