GotSome ?

Fill us in on the background behind ‘GotSome’?
GotSome started in sometime in early 2014 when we released a track called Bassline on Defected records. Originally two guys from Bristol but now it’s just me ‘Adam’!

What were the inspirations behind the name?
The inspiration behind the name GotSome is from a funk break we sampled right at the very start. I believe the original track we sampled was by Billy (Sugar Billy) Garner and was called ‘I Got Some’!!

What was growing up in Bristol’s music scene like compared to other parts of the country?
Growing up in Bristol was amazing. From a young age I could remember hearing pirate radios blasting out Hip Hop and Reggae. Going to Glastonbury Festival & St Paul’s Carnival seeing new bands and sound system culture was all around me. Growing up in Bristol made me who I am now. I’m thankful for being brought up in such a creative city & I doubt I would be the same person if I was from somewhere else in the country.

Who were your teenage inspirations in music?
My teenage inspirations were most definitely Michael Jackson, Prince, Massive Attack, Dr Dre & Biggy, Full Cycle (Jungle/D&B crew from Bristol) to name a few. I was a relatively late bloomer when it came to house music. I was really into Jazzy Jeff and Kenny Dope’s hip hip & funk mixes.  I remember buying a defected CD with a hip hop mix & a house mix & I ended up taking the house mix on holiday with me by mistake then I was hooked on house music. Thank you Kenny & Jeff for making me listen to house music!

What have been your major milestones since your arrival on the scene?
I guess there’s been a bunch of milestones for me but two stand out the most.  First being the release of ‘Bassline’ on Defected & the second being my edit of Kanye Wests ‘Fade’ both which came out of the blue really. With ‘Bassline’ we had been sitting on the tune for a while. A bunch of Djs were playing it in the clubs.
It wasn’t until B.Traits played on BBC Radio 1. She was filling in for another DJ (Pete Tong or Annie Mac I think) a couple of the guys from Defected records heard the track while on the way for a gig. I woke up the next day to a message from Andy Daniels (A&R at defected) and the rest was history I guess.
With the Kanye West ‘Fade edit’ that was just supposed to be a DJ tool for me to play over the summer at all the festivals. I kept hearing it on the original on radio and wishing I could play it in my GotSome sets. It had so many classic house samples which I loved. So I went into the studio and flipped it to 125bpm. – I didn’t want to fuck with it too much because it was perfect the way it was so It’s not really a remix just a DJ Edit.

How would you describe your sound in three words?
Kicks Hats & Bass… Sorry is that four? LOL

How did you come together with vocalist Lisa Kekaula for “I Don’t Know”?
Originally the song had been written by someone else. We had a bunch of different demo’s through and Lisa’s version really stood out. I’ve been a big fan of Basement Jaxx & of their track with Lisa Kakula’s ’Good Luck’ so it seemed fitting.

Have you produced a track like ‘I Don’t Know’ before?
Most of my tracks do have similar sounds. I always try and add sounds that I’m influenced by and with ‘I Don’t Know’ it was heavily influenced by my love of Jungle music and early DnB. I feel as a producer it sets you apart if you stay true to your musical heritage & influences growing up.

What was it like to receive early support Kenny Dope, Disclosure & My Nu Leng?
For me to get support from your peers is one of the most important things. It helps you move forward in the right direction. When I was growing up all these DJs where my hero’s. Then all of a sudden there playing your tunes… A couple of years back I remember seeing Kenny Dope play ‘Bassline’ at a massive festival and for me that was one of the maddest things ever. Here’s the guy that got me into house music and he was playing my tune it at a festival in front of thousands of people. That was a dream come true!!  Even a few weeks back I gave DJ Zinc one of my tunes. I heard him play it on his Rinse FM shows. When I was a kid I used to spend hours on hours listening to his sets and buying his records. What a G!!!

Describe the feeling to release the track on Danny Howard’s label ‘Nothing Else Matters’?
Sweet as!!! Danny has been supporting me for a long time playing my tunes out in his sets also on the radio. So it was amazing when asked to sign one of my records. His label seems to be in a really great place pushing House music forward.

You’ve collaborated with Grime originator Wiley on Vibe Out – what was he like to work with?
I’ve been a big fan of Wiley for many years. I first came across him while watching grime videos at my local record store. I was obsessed with the whole Eski sound. Those squelchy square basses used to send me crazy.
With ‘Vibe Out’ I actually didn’t work with him directly. I wrote the tune then the label ‘MTA’ and my management spoke to his team and then he sent a vocal idea over. It seemed to work then I finished the track off.
I would still like to work with him in the future. He is a true Don and is the originator of Grime!!

Is working with artists typically associated outside of house music something that interests you?
Yea most defiantly!! Working with all types of artists is so important to me. Making house music and putting a RnB singer on is going to give it a different edge compared to putting a house singer and a house song.
“I feel you need to flip it to make it stand out”

“I Don’t Know ft Lisa Kekaula” on VEVO’s YouTube channel has amassed over 65k views in just one month – is the era of social media something you embrace?
65K views…. Thats sick!! hahahahah…I didn’t even know that…
100% embrace it but try not to make it consume you.
It’s so easy to look at your phone (The Black Mirror) all day. Get out there and live your life!

Can you see your style ever changing in the future?
Yea my style is constantly moving and progressing. Every time I DJ I hear more new music that makes me want to push my music forward. I recently started a new alias with one of my pals. It’s all very hush hush at the minute but you will the able to hear the music over the summer. When I’m not DJ I always find myself listening to RnB/Future RnB which is something I want to explore over the next few years.

How has 2017 been for you so far?
2017 has been a crazy whirlwind year so for me so far. ‘I Don’t Know’ came out in March then that was followed by my Collab with Billy Kenny’ The Pharaoh’ that has just come out on This Aint Bristol.
I’ve been DJing in and around the UK, Europe, Asia & Australia. Also been lucky enough to work in studios in America & Asia. Now just back in time for the UK festival season.

Do you have other upcoming plans in store for the rest of the year?
Yes loads! Just in the studio as we speak getting some new music and DJ edits together for the summer festivals. Also just got the masters back for my EP on Love & Other. That’s due out at the start of June. You can catch me playing in Hannover in Germany, Common People in Southampton & Oxford,  Love Saves the Day in Bristol. Parklife in Manchester. Glastonbury Festival & Hideout Festival in Croatia to name a few.  So hyped for this Summer!!!!
