The opening guitar riff is the hook for me, it makes me want to know what happens next. The lyrics speak to being grateful for the most-high and the theme of finally obtaining true love resonates with me.
Gloria Gaynor – I Will Survive (DJ KaktuZ Orchestra deep house remix)
This is my go-to song for encouragement, upliftment and a reminder of who I am. Ms. Gaynor digs soul deep in her delivery and I love that it is danceable.
Cajmere featuring Dajae – Brighter days (Underground Goodies Mix)
This is a classic, I love how it builds and by the time the vocals drop I can’t resist moving. It feels a bit tribal.
Sade – Paradise (Original)
The Jazzy up beat tune is a head bop, Sade is beautiful and graceful and the lyrics portray the feeling of falling in love (“I give you the world if it was mine”).
Portishead – Only You (Original)
The touch of hip-hop with that beautifully eerie hypnotizing voice left me astonished and wanting more of Beth Gibbons.
Lil Simz – Offence (Original)
When I heard THIS! I had to let anyone who would listen, hear this. It’s always awesome to hear a good female emcee and the track is great, you hear everything, the strings, bass, drums, a little bit of keys but well organized. Love it.
Skunk Anansi – Weak As I Am
Hard to pick one, I simply Love Anansi. A tight rock band led by a Black Female was the first for me, her vocals pierce through your soul and the lyrics are REAL is the cherry on top.
Too Short – Blow The Whistle (Original)
The beat is classic! Old school hip-hop! Enough said!
Jill Scott – Golden (Original)
The original has always been an anthem for me. Life is what we make it, freedom is precious, not to sound like a cliché but this speaks truth to me.
Byron Cage – Presence Of The Lord Is Here (Original)
Ain’t nothing like a good praise song! Gospel music keeps the spirit of good music alive!
