Back To Mine With Markus Eden

Markus Eden hails from Cyprus and has been deep in the music world for many years. Along the way, he’s done it all from early hardcore and breakbeat to jungle and drum & bass, 2-step and house. He has lived across Europe and held several residencies while nowadays he is one of the scene-leaders back in Cyprus. Following outings on the likes of Digital Delight and Sultry Vibes, he now makes his mark on London’s Creche Records with his new ‘Dub Siren EP’. DMCWorld goes back to mine with Markus Eden.

McRad – Weakness

I grew up skating from the mid 80’s and one of the first videos I ever saw was Public Domain by Powell Peralta. My favourite part of the video – the “rubber boys” section had this playing in the background. I have loved skate punk / rock ever since!

Queens of the Stoneage – How To Handle A Rope

Again, apart from dance music I do listen to a lot of rock / guitar based music. Nirvana was one of the first bands I was into and QOTS are kind of a natural progression of that sound! Ruff and dirty!

Sade – Love Is Stronger Than Pride

Before playing what I do now I was a big soulful house head in the late 90’s – early 2000’s. This got me into a lot of older soul and Rn’B too! One of the things I discovered through this was the world of SADE. Every track is beautiful, so it was hard to choose one, but this is it!

The Cure – Trust

Growing up with an older brother in the mid 80’s this was one of the bands that I heard through him for the first time before liking them myself. Hard to choose one, as with Sade, but this is a gem!

Guns n’ Roses – My Michelle

Possibly the first musical memory I have is hearing “Sweet Child of Mine” for the first time. Appetite For Destruction was the first tape I ever bought. And it was “My Michelle” which became my favourite song from that album! Gn’R were geniuses!

Olafur Arnalds – Lag Fyrir Ommu

I don’t know how I got into Olafur Arnalds music! Maybe it was YouTube recommendations but I really like this kind of stuff every now and again! Very deep and emotional. This song is off his Living Room Songs album, which is excellent!

UB40 – King

My mum used to have a Best of UB40 tape in her car in the 90’s. I used to think UB40 were naff but after being forced to listen to them for a while I developed a deep appreciation of their contribution to reggae. They brought the sound to people who normally would never have gotten into it like my mum… and me!

Los Olvidados – Listen To You

This was on a Thrasher Skate rock tape that I bought in Hamburg’s I Punkt skate shop round about 1990. The best tune on that tape hands down. Can’t remember which volume it was though. Endless sessions spent with this in the background!

Depeche Mode – Everything Counts

Another band that I was listening to before I knew I was. My brother used to play them in his room and in time I grew to like them. Like with a lot bands here there’s too many good tunes to choose one but this kind of stands out for me!

Blind Melon – Tones of Home

Blind Melon was one of my big loves in the mid 90’s, this tune being one of my favourites! I loved the way they found a perfect mix of rock / grunge and country music to blend into something that was really uniquely their own! RIP Shannon Hoon.
